Practice on the Road

Karleen just wrote to me about her challenges with doing practice while traveling. That’s a big one. And worth finding a strategy because we all have to travel!

Sometimes I manage to snag a solitary room for a half hour here and there, but usually the best place is the bed. It’s pretty big, and clean. (You can never rely on the state of en route floors.) I’ve done a lot on a bed. (…okay okay) Stretching, small movement, rocking, etc. Then I stand beside it and, with a trusty iPod, dance for a while. Really the hardest part is doing practice while whoever I share a room with wants to talk or watch TV. (When I travel with my partner, he has taken to doing his own exercises.)

Long hours of driving zaps me. I find that taking a shower helps ground me and changes the ions.

Anyone else have good ideas about doing practice while traveling?

Especially when I travel I find myself on my feet – a lot – so I practice feet awareness when I am standing in line, etc, etc. Basically, any weight shifting, phalange wiggling, isolated movements, just being aware of my feet and weight distribution. Simple, but effective, especially when considering residual movement into the rest of the leg (ankles, knees, hip sockets, hips).
